Contest is open to all students in Ashtabula County (pre-K to College)

The Ā鶹¾«Ń” at Ashtabula Library and Associate Professor of Sociology Jessica Leveto, Ph.D. are partnering with the Ashtabula NAACP and the Ashtabula County District Library to present ā€œBlack History and Meā€, an art and writing contest celebrating Black excellence and innovation.  The contest is open to all students in Ashtabula County, from pre-K through college.

Winners are eligible for cash prizes, publication and exhibition. Select works will be published in a cross-collaboration open access journal developed and hosted by the Ā鶹¾«Ń”Ashtabula Library. Deadline for submission is March 12, 2021.

According to the contest rules, entries can be poetry, essay, short story, spoken word, cross-genre, graphic design, photography, performative or creative video, posters, drawings or other original pieces of artwork.

ā€œI’m excited to see the creativity of the community,ā€ Leveto said. ā€œWe know that there’s a lot of talent in the community that doesn’t get showcased enough, and so around a topic as important as this, we’re really excited to see what comes in.ā€

Submissions can be submitted digitally to naacpashtabula@gmail.com or physically dropped off at the Ashtabula County District Library from 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. between March 10-12.
