The Ā鶹¾«Ń” at Ashtabula Library and Associate Professor of Sociology Jessica Leveto, Ph.D. are partnering with the Ashtabula NAACP and the Ashtabula County District Library to present āBlack History and Meā, an art and writing contest celebrating Black excellence and innovation. The contest is open to all students in Ashtabula County, from pre-K through college.
Winners are eligible for cash prizes, publication and exhibition. Select works will be published in a cross-collaboration open access journal developed and hosted by the Ā鶹¾«Ń”Ashtabula Library. Deadline for submission is March 12, 2021.
According to the contest rules, entries can be poetry, essay, short story, spoken word, cross-genre, graphic design, photography, performative or creative video, posters, drawings or other original pieces of artwork.
āIām excited to see the creativity of the community,ā Leveto said. āWe know that thereās a lot of talent in the community that doesnāt get showcased enough, and so around a topic as important as this, weāre really excited to see what comes in.ā
Submissions can be submitted digitally to naacpashtabula@gmail.com or physically dropped off at the Ashtabula County District Library from 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. between March 10-12.
Contest winners will be announced on Juneteenth (June 19, 2021).
