Note: The final two semesters (Fall II and Spring II) require availability during daytime school hours.

Summer I consists of 7 hours of courses. These include coursework in principles of secondary teaching, educational psychology, and a seminar with field-based observations and teaching activities. In addition, undergraduate coursework to fulfill licensure requirements will be completed.

Full Description

The Master of Arts in Teaching degree in Secondary Education serves individuals who have never held a teaching certificate or license.

There are two options of study:

  1. 11-month option, which requires full-time study beginning the summer of the year admitted and continuing throughout the academic year
  2. two-year option, which allows for part-time enrollment

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum 2.750 undergraduate GPA on a 4.000-point scale
  • Official transcript(s)

  • Essay (1,000 words) explaining desire to teach
  • Questions in Anticipation of Licensure form
  • Content evaluation (to be completed before applying)

  • English language proficiency - all international students must provide proof of English language proficiency (unless they meet specific exceptions to waive) by earning one of the following:1
    • Minimum 79 TOEFL iBT score
    • Minimum 6.5 IELTS score

Applicants will be assessed holistically, considering academic credentials, academic or professional references, non-academic dimensions and other specific program criteria.

Program Description

Full Description

The Integrated Language Arts Additional Licensure Preparation non-degree program prepares students to obtain an additional teacher license in integrated language arts (reading, writing, speaking and listening) for grades 7-12. Completion of the coursework is a prerequisite to being recommended by Â鶹¾«Ñ¡ for licensure, which is granted by the Ohio Department of Education. This non-degree program cannot be used for students seeking initial licensure.

This program does not culminate in a master's degree. Students interested in a master's degree at Â鶹¾«Ñ¡must be fully admitted into and complete the requirements for the master's program, in addition to courses that are prescribed here for additional licensure.

Minimum 2.600 content area GPA is required for the Adolescence to Young Adult 7-12 licensure.

  • Additional Coursework: An analysis of additional content-area coursework required at the post-undergraduate level will be completed before entering into the program, and a Plan of Study will be created based on transcript analysis and current licensure requirements by the Ohio Department of Education. A minimum C grade is required in each of these courses. This coursework would be in addition to requirements for the Integrated Language Arts non-degree program.

Licensure Information

Prior to program completion, the candidate must demonstrate proficiencies in the following areas (including but not limited to): data literacy and analysis; use of research and assessment data; leadership and collaboration; utilizing and supporting appropriate technology for the discipline; and application of professional dispositions, laws and policies, codes of ethics and professional standards appropriate to their field of specialization.

Candidates seeking Ohio licensure are required to pass the OAE Content Knowledge Assessment for each teaching field in order to apply for licensure. Students should consult their advisors for specific program requirements and refer to the Ohio Department of Education-Educator Preparation website for more information on assessments specific to licensure type.
