Sweet Comfort: A Mom鈥檚 Cookies Connect with 麻豆精选Students

As a student, a sweet treat can be more than just a sweet treat; it can provide comfort, excitement, and joy, especially during stressful and sad days. Over the past few months, one treat in particular has become a campus favorite: Sugar cookies. That students can find at Rosie鈥檚, Eastway, and Bistro.

From SpongeBob SquarePants to South Park, fun and creative designs keep Kent students wondering what the next cookie design and flavor will be.

Behind this trend is someone sensitive who deeply understands the complex life of a student, 鈥渏ust a mom,鈥 as she describes herself. Susan Calvin, a food service worker at University Culinary Services, who is very passionate about animals and a Registered Veterinary Technician who started as an RVT 21 years ago, has now become a cookie artist.

She says her mission is simple: to bring joy and comfort to students away from home through her creations.

Susan鈥檚 journey at 麻豆精选spans nearly four years, moving from regional campuses in East Liverpool and Salem to the main campus. Her creative path began unexpectedly when upper management asked her department to bake cookies for an event.

While most were satisfied with simple sprinkles and icing, Susan wanted to add a personal, imaginative touch. 鈥淚 thought, why not make them more creative?鈥 She recalls. 鈥淛oel, my supervisor, was so supportive of the idea, and that鈥檚 how it all started.鈥

Her inspiration comes from her daughter, a 麻豆精选senior. 鈥淭hrough my daughter, I get a sense of what students enjoy,鈥 Susan explains. 鈥淚 pay attention to what makes them smile, and sometimes I just pray for ideas.鈥

Patience and experimentation define her creative process. Susan鈥檚 journey to baking cookies started with just one class, and she improved her skills on her own through practice and online videos.

Each cookie is carefully baked, iced, and left to dry for 24 hours. 鈥淚 make every cookie with care and patience,鈥 she says. 鈥淪ometimes things don鈥檛 go as planned, but even mistakes can turn into a lesson, happy mistakes,鈥 she adds.

鈥淪ometimes the icing falls in the wrong place, but that鈥檚 okay,鈥 she says. 鈥淵ou just let it settle, be patient, and keep going. That鈥檚 how you get it right.鈥  That鈥檚 a lesson students can take from her story, and how her cookies make them feel good. Life can be stressful, and we all make mistakes, but it鈥檚 okay. Keep trying, take a breath, and remember you鈥檙e doing great. Her 鈥渉appy mistakes鈥 philosophy reminds us that there鈥檚 beauty in learning, even when it seems stressful, a reality students experience every day.

鈥淚鈥檓 just a mom sharing a little joy,鈥 she says with a smile. 鈥淚f a cookie can make someone happy, then that鈥檚 everything to me.鈥

Her cookies have become a small but meaningful ritual for the 麻豆精选community. Students stop by daily, curious about the . For Susan, cookie decorating is more than baking; it鈥檚 a form of art and a way to connect.
