The Center for Teaching and Learning is offering AI-related and other workshops throughout this year. Individuals who participate in 4 AI workshops (at least 3 different one-hour sessions) and submit reflections will be eligible to earn special recognition for their commitment to learning about AI. The Why & How of Supporting Student Reading
It鈥檚 hard to miss alarmist headlines asking, 鈥淚s this the end of reading?鈥 While perceptions that students don't鈥/can鈥檛 read aren鈥檛 new, challenges like AI-generated summaries are new. In this session, we鈥檒l consider what research says about our perceptions of student reading, and we鈥檒l think about student reading through the lens of motivation research/theories. Finally, we鈥檒l offer strategies for supporting students鈥 reading for understanding (and not just for completion).

Play with Purpose: Designing Joyful Learning Experiences
Emotion can affect whether a student tunes in or out, learns or doesn鈥檛. By designing with the science of emotion in mind, we can influence students鈥 learning experiences. In this interactive hybrid workshop, you鈥檒l discover how experiencing positive emotions in learning can increase student engagement, encourage collaboration, and support deeper learning without sacrificing rigor. These strategies will range from those requiring minimal planning to those that center around more extensive design that you can use in face-to-face or online courses. We will also offer guidance for lightening the design load, including use of GenAI.

Collaboration by Design: Helping Students Work Better Together
Students bring diverse experiences, expectations and comfort levels to collaborative learning. While teamwork remains one of the most sought-after skills by employers, effective collaboration doesn鈥檛 happen automatically. We can help our students to identify their own and others鈥 strengths and to work together productively. In this workshop, we will discuss practical approaches for preparing students for productive teamwork, creating structures that support collaboration.

Reclaiming Joy: Teaching in the Age of GenAI
Hate thinking about students offloading their learning to GenAI? We鈥檒l explore ways to shift students鈥 focus away from grades and products by creating learning experiences that emphasize process, reflection, and authentic engagement. We will discuss the susceptibility of your assignments to GenAI use and provide suggestions for assignment design with and without incorporating GenAI into the assignment.
