Chemistry Professor David Bowers truly believes in his students and wants to see them succeed, whether it be the nervous freshman in his First-Year Experience course or the junior pre-medicine major in his General Chemistry II course. It is his passion for student success and willingness to do what it takes to help his students that led him to win one of the 2019 Outstanding Teaching Awards.

When human development and family studies major Katherine Schroeder heard about the Ohio College2Careers program coming to �鶹��ѡ for her first semester of sophomore year, Schroeder was determined to learn about what the program could offer her. After applying, Schroeder has been given the support she had been looking for in her college experience.

�鶹��ѡ is working with area autism-focused organizations as well as KultureCity®, a nonprofit dedicated to providing accessibility and inclusion for those with special needs, to create a sensory-friendly gameday experience that can be enjoyed by all. Fans attending Kent State’s Dec. 21 mens basketball game versus Hampton University will feel an expression of the university’s ongoing commitment to its core values of kindness, mutual respect and inclusion.

The �鶹��ѡ alumni family grew by nearly 3,000 new graduates as the university held its Fall Commencement ceremonies. For the Kent Campus, Commencement ceremonies took place Friday, Dec. 13, and Saturday, Dec. 14, at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation (MAC) Center.

Two nationally known neuroscience researchers have joined �鶹��ѡto continue their quest to uncover the brain’s complex functions—and to collaborate with researchers from a wide range of disciplines at the university and across the region to advance our knowledge of the human brain and translate those discoveries into new treatments and care for brain and nervous system diseases.

“Small successes matter, even when students understand a complex idea, attend tutoring to improve their exam grade or make personal connections to learning,” said Rachael Blasiman, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Psychology for �鶹��ѡ at Salem. This positive teaching philosophy led her to winning the Distinguished Teaching Award.

�鶹��ѡstudents who park on the northern edge of the Kent Campus can now give a collective cheer as additional parking is on the way via an 1,100-space, five-story parking deck. The �鶹��ѡBoard of Trustees approved the deck’s construction at its Dec. 4 meeting.

�鶹��ѡ’s first major construction project to create a new signature gateway to the Kent Campus will begin in the summer of 2020. At its Dec. 4 meeting, the �鶹��ѡBoard of Trustees approved the construction of the university’s first parking deck.

What could be better to reduce end-of-semester stress than petting a dog? How about petting multiple dogs and digitally dunking with LeBron through esports? This year’s Stress-Free Zone, which is from 3-5 p.m. on Dec. 9 and 10, will be hosted on the first floor of University Library and will feature esports, therapy dogs, makerspace activities and more.
